A Community Event to Float Your Boat: Batiquitos Lagoon Kayak Cleanup Day in Carlsbad Magazine

 The lagoons of San Diego North County are some of the area's most beautiful and valuable natural resources. We are so fortunate to have four significant lagoons right in San Diego County. I got a chance this month to write an article for Carlsbad Magazine about a special event held at Batiquitos Lagoon every year, when the waters are opened up to kayakers for the purpose of an annual cleanup. The chance to paddle the waters of the lagoon, which is normally forbidden, attracts kayak enthusiasts from around the county. This year's event is held Sept. 25-26. And wait until you find out some of the things they've hauled in.

A Conversation With Senior Tracker Ann Hunt, in AAA Westways

Did you know that there are people who track wildlife in San Diego County? When I found out about the San Diego Tracking Team, I knew I wanted to interview a tracker. I thought tracking was something you only saw in Wild West movies, but it turns out that ordinary people like you and me can be trained to track wildlife from different signs. The San Diego Tracking team does this in many of the urban/rural boundaries in the county and the data are used for planning purposes and to keep tabs on the vitality of the wildlife in the area. I had the pleasure of interviewing Senior Tracker Ann Hunt for the January/February issue of AAA Westways. See the online version of the article, or

Community Supported Agriculture Brings the Farm to You

I wrote this piece for San Diego Family about the benefits of Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA programs, for families. CSA is a system whereby a local farm sells subscriptions to a weekly or biweekly produce delivery, giving subscribers the best of locally grown, usually organic produce, and small farmers the security of a stable market base. Families benefit by having the convenience of fresh, organic food delivered either to their door or a drop-off location close to them. Our family subscribes to the Be Wise Ranch CSA and really likes it. The "locavore" movement to eat sustainably grown and harvested food from within your own area saves energy in food transportation costs, gets people back in touch with the cycle of seasonal food and provides regional food security by keeping local food producers in business. CSA subscriptions are a perfect, easy way to start eating more local food.
