PR for Soles4Souls Shoe Drive results in media coverage, over 7,000 pairs of shoes donated

I teamed with San Diego PR agency Margolin & Associates on this successful PR campaign for the San Diego Chapter of NAPO for their shoe drive benefitting Soles4Souls. I wrote the release and media alert announcing the drive in October, and Lisa Margolin leveraged that into television coverage at three major media outlets in San Diego. We summarized the results in another release sent out in January, 2012 announcing the successful collection of over 7,000 pairs of shoes.

ORGANIZING EXPERTS HOST SHOE DRIVE FOR PEOPLE IN NEED

San Diegans invited to clean out their closets of gently worn shoes and donate them to charity

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 21, 2011 — The local chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) has organized a shoe drive to benefit people in need. Organizers are requesting that San Diegans donate new and gently worn shoes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive in San Diego.

The San Diego Chapter of NAPO is accepting all kinds of shoes in any condition except wet, including unmatched shoes. Every donation will be delivered to those in need by Soles4Souls, which distributes shoes to people living in extreme poverty and recovering from natural disasters.

The group expects to collect 5000 shoes at the four-hour event.

“Partnering with Soles4Souls is a natural fit for NAPO,” said Sue Crum, San Diego NAPO President, “because as Professional Organizers we know that people are more likely to let go of things if they know they are going to a good cause. Soles4Souls helps distribute the estimated 1.5 billion shoes taking up space in people’s closets to adults and children who really need them.”

Soles4Souls has distributed more than 13 million pairs of shoes since 2005, providing one pair of shoes to a person in need every seven seconds. Shoes that require cleaning or conditioning, or are inappropriate for crisis relief, such as high heels, are provided to microenterprise programs in developing countries. Shoes that Soles4Souls collects that cannot be worn are recycled.

“We need partners like NAPO San Diego to get behind Soles4Souls,” said Wayne Elsey, the charity’s founder and CEO. “Donating shoes is one of the most simple yet profound acts you can do, because it will greatly improve someone’s life in the most difficult of times.”
